Religion is not mental disorder!

Asserting that religion is mental illness is unethical, unreasonable and extremely arrogant!

I recently found myself talking to another atheist online.

This person began by asserting that religious belief is a mental illness. In fairness to him he did climb down from that very generalised position after a while but I know that many others are just as dismissive of their fellow men and women. Many theists think the same of all atheists and that’s just as silly.

In this video though my focus is on the general irrationality of all humans and how that is factored into the diagnostic process. My view is that all such assertions are unethical, unreasonable and extremely arrogant.

What do you think?

I’m on ‘The Unshaw podcast’!

My discussion about faith, atheism, mental health, evolution and nursing with Robert Shaw

The Unshaw podcast discusses faith, atheism, religiosity and a whole lot more besides. In this episode Robert Shaw (no, not THAT Robert Shaw) and I discuss mental health, faith and deconversion, politics and even evolutionary psychology.

Intelligent design and a fat bloke bathing

God created everything with ‘saying stuff magic’ like “let there be…” or “Abracadabra”.

Creationists tell me that the world, life, the cosmos, everything was designed and created by God, simply by using ‘saying stuff magic’ like “let there be…” or “Abracadabra”. Furthermore they tell me that this design is all for our benefit (or at least for theirs) and that it’s all perfect. I have a few questions. I also have a bathtub.

Chicken or egg?

Come on then, Col… Let’s ‘ave yer!

An old mate of mine challenged me yesterday to make a video which, I think I correctly discerned was a challenge to evolutionary theory. It’s difficult to be sure because all he said was “chicken or egg” in a thread that had nothing to do with evolution and when I suggested that’s what he meant he replied only “do it”.

I’m pretty sure he’s just trolling. I suspect he’s not really a creationist but hey ho, I may be wrong. The deal is we debate it next Sunday.

My suggestion is via zoom with both recording it and both free to publish, unedited wherever we like. 6pm OK for you, Col?

Chicken or egg?

Happy Darwin Day 2023

Darwin’s theory underpins modern biology, zoology, botany, anthropology, antibiotics & vaccinations.

It’s Darwin Day again!

On this day in 1809 (the same day Abraham Lincoln was born), Charles Darwin entered this world in Shrewsbury, England. He’s the bloke who, along with Alfred Russel Wallace, gave us the theory of evolution by means of natural selection. So celebrate!

Darwin and Wallace’s theory isn’t just valuable because it underpins modern biology, zoology, botany and even anthropology. It’s also the reason why we have medicines such as antibiotics and vaccinations that keep on working, year on year. Cheers, Charles!

You’re irrational… and so am I

All humans are irrational. We evolved that way.

All humans are irrational. We evolved that way.

If we hadn’t developed these tendencies to be irrational it’s doubtful that our species would ever have made it off the African Savannah. Actually it’s doubtful that we’d have evolved beyond some earlier species of quadruped, let alone primate or hominid.

But if we’re irrational, what on earth can we do about it? Click the link to find out!
