Whence cometh morality?

An old school friend of mine, now a vicar in the Anglican church has a particular view about the source of morality. He also seems to think that atheists can have no real backing for their morality because it’s not ‘transcendent’ at base. It doesn’t come from the mind of God, in other words. This video is my response to that position.

In answering his question I’ve borrowed shamelessly from Matt Dillahunty, Sam Harris and one or two others but hey ho – it’s still good info wherever it comes from and nobody thinks up everything all on their own. The video’s a bit rough because I made it in a hurry but I think the point holds well enough. Facebook might be interesting tonight!

Evil atheists?

Many religious people will tell you that it is impossible for humans to behave well without a God belief. In that case, I’m glad they’re religious, if that’s the best they can manage.

Many religious people will tell you that it is impossible for humans to behave well without a God belief. They claim that without superstitious magical thinking people will go around raping, murdering, stealing, cheating and doing all sorts of horrendous things. Whenever people talk about ALL humans they’re really just talking about themselves – the only human they really understand. In that case, I’m glad they’re religious, if that’s the best they can manage.
