He promised me a ‘brawl’

My debate with a man who seems to be a cross between an animist and a deist.

About a week ago Aaron Fauth issued a challenge on Facebook

I was happy to accept the challenge, if only because I was intrigued by his complete misunderstanding of atheism and of atheists in general.

I invited him to join me in a discussion with the two basic conditions I always include:

  1. We both have the option to record it.
  2. We can both publish the video UNEDITED wherever we choose.

This video is the result of our recent online conversation. What’s your opinion? Did Aaron live up to his challenge?

Atheists just want to sin!

But if sin is abusing others, condemning the innocent and sewing division within society where none exists then you Christians really ought to look closer to home.
Remove the plank from your own eye before you complain to your brother about the mote in his.

Christian apologists sometimes try to discredit atheists by claiming that we’re only turning away from God because we love to sin. The implication, of course is that we’re all violent, abusive drug addicts and promiscuous users, desperate to lead innocent believers away from the true path. This seems bizarre considering the stuff in the Bible advocating all kinds of abhorrent behaviour, even going so far as the murder of innocent children… and cattle.

Indeed, in the book of Exodus God makes a point of killing Pharoah’s cattle multiple times. I suppose he resurrected them between times which makes Jesus’ post-crucifixion antics fairly commonplace but I digress.

Apparently, as an atheist I like to sin. Well, yes – that’s true actually – but not in the way you think.

Let’s look at what sin really means…

Peace that passeth all understanding

If you want to experience the peace that passeth all understanding – you’ll find it much easier to achieve through secular means.

Christians promise an indwelling peace, ‘the peace of the spirit’ when people submit themselves the their Lord, Jesus. It’s this promise of peace that prompts them to claim that atheists are miserable. There’s only one problem – it’s nonsense. I spent 10 years trying to find that peace and I can tell you – it’s a lie.

But don’t despair. If you want to experience the peace that passeth all understanding – you’ll find it much easier to achieve through secular means. Try this instead…

A Stoic guide for mental health

This video summarizes the basics without any need for ghosts, Gods or ghoulies!

Christianity promised to teach me how to be contented in any circumstance. The church, its people and its mythical God broke that promise.

I’ve spent decades since working out how to live peacefully, happily and well. This video summarizes the basics without any need for ghosts, Gods or ghoulies!

Enjoy

You’re irrational… and so am I

All humans are irrational. We evolved that way.

All humans are irrational. We evolved that way.

If we hadn’t developed these tendencies to be irrational it’s doubtful that our species would ever have made it off the African Savannah. Actually it’s doubtful that we’d have evolved beyond some earlier species of quadruped, let alone primate or hominid.

But if we’re irrational, what on earth can we do about it? Click the link to find out!

Laughing at myself

Don’t take yourself too seriously.

If you want to be happy you first need to stop taking yourself too seriously. If others laugh at you it’s because there’s something funny. Find it – enjoy it – laugh at it.

Why The God free guide?

40 years ago I was approached by Christians. It was an unhappy time for me – I was 17 and had just split up with my first real love. I was desperate to feel a sense of belonging. In other words, I was ripe for harvest. The bastards got me.

Ten years later, having accepted young earth creationism, the inferiority of women and the bigotry of Christian homophobia to name just three of the travesties I accepted, I found myself reviewing it all. And once I allowed myself to think critically again the whole thing came crashing down – and so did my sense of self.

Christianity promised me a better life but all it really did was screw me up. This channel aims to help others avoid that trap with a blend of counter-apologetics, critical thinking skills and an alternative set of principles for a happy life – ones that actually work this time.

This stuff has been 30 years in the making so far. I hope you find it helpful.
